On April 24, 2015, The Haven Ministries, 501(c)3, purchased the property, formerly known as “Bank Street Bar,” at 2507 Bank Street, Louisville, KY. This is in the heart of the Portland neighborhood. The adjoining alley running along the building has been coined “drug alley” by the locals. Upon clean-up of these grounds, multiple heroin syringes and crack pipes were found littered, attesting to the increasing heroin and drug epidemic in Portland(west-side of Louisville.)
The GREAT NEWS! No longer a bar, rather, this building is being transformed into “Cup of Joy.” The “Cup of Joy” will be a Christian coffee shop/café which will serve multi-purposes to the Portland neighborhood. During the day, it would serve as a very inexpensive coffee shop/cafe, where locals could have a safe place to convene.
There will be pastries, baked goods, and eventually, light luncheons served at “McDonald-like” pricing. (The focus is not profit, rather, ministering to the surrounding locals and creating a friendly haven for children, elderly, and all.)
In the evenings, we will have a soup kitchen weekly, a 12-step group meeting, a Bible study group, and other community centered events. It will provide counseling, provide work for recovering addicts, and endeavor to bring sunshine to the Portland neighborhood. (The founder, Esther Lyon, is an anesthesia provider – with 4.5 years of sobriety. Esther has heart for those with addictions and has moved to the west-end of Louisville (Portland neighborhood) for Christian outreach purposes.)
